Goddess Lakshmi
Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated in India and by the Indian diaspora around the world. Goddess Lakshmi - an embodiment of auspiciousness, opulent wealth, and prosperity - is fondly revered during this time, and most of the Indians around the world, irrespective of their religions and regions, celebrate and welcome her in their homes on the third day of Diwali. She is generally depicted with four hands, holding lotus and conch in two hands (or sometimes with two lotuses), and the other two hands in ‘abhaya’ (assurance) and ‘varada’ (giving) gestures. Families will go and buy the deity’s idol from the market, typically from the street vendors who make and sell the beautiful idols in varying sizes.
